How external influences can affect calf development in utero, impacting growth, health and performance later in life.

By the time a calf takes its first breath, its path to productivity and health has already been significantly shaped in the womb. Foetal programming is a relatively new but increasingly important concept in youngstock management. It refers to how maternal or external influences during gestation can change the way a calf develops, often with lifelong consequences in terms of a calf’s health, immunity, and future performance. These changes are typically epigenetic in nature, meaning they don’t alter the calf’s DNA but can still impact how its genes function.

Factors to consider:

  • Maternal factors: age, parity, body condition, milk yield, and health status.
  • External factors: nutrition, housing environment

With Dr Bethan Till, learn how nutrition, stress and environment affect foetal development, immunity, fertility and growth. Gain practical strategies to support pregnant cows, improve colostrum quality and set calves up for stronger health and productivity.
