Buzz Club- Bug Bunker Project

Give bugs a winter home! Join the Buzz Club’s Bug Bunker project, build shelters, survey monthly, and help protect invertebrates across the UK.

Have you ever wondered where insects go over Winter? Many insects hibernate, but many stay active using leaf litter, log piles, rocks for insulation and shelter. It is very common for gardens to be kept clear of these habitats and so the Buzz Club wants to find out whether we can create a bug hotel (a Bug Bunker) that effectively provides this.

Last year, the Buzz Club volunteers created 100 bunkers across the UK, surveying 9122 individual invertebrates using the bunkers throughout winter. This meant that, on average, each participant was giving a winter home to 90 bugs! This year we want to collect more data for this project. We ask you to build two bunkers, and survey them once a month.

This is a project for people of all ages and abilities – no prior knowledge is needed and you will be supported throughout by the project lead, Issy. This project has also been very popular with schools and community groups! If you would like to conduct this project in a group setting, please get in touch with Issy first at buzzclub@sussex.ac.uk.
